On March 14, 1954, Chief Minister C. Rajagopalachari inaugurated a care home and camp at Melpakkam. The camp, which could accommodate 500 persons, started with 83 beggars. The inmates were given 2 square meals and kanji every day. The Medical Officer of the Government Dispensary at Poonamalee visited them daily
