The first fake death of Kanchan Rai in the Bhayander insurance scam was reported on October 11, 2021, citing cardiac respiratory arrest. Her son, Dhanraj (30), provided the necessary documents, and the insurance company transferred Rs 20.4 lakh to his account after verification. Another insurance company also settled a Rs 25 lakh claim for Kanchan’s “death” to Dhanraj. On October 20, 2023, another death was recorded for Pavitra, with her husband Rohit (48) receiving Rs 24.2 lakh. Investigations revealed Kanchan had policies from five companies, using fake documents.
